Area Rug FAQs
Below are some commonly asked questions about area rugs that Universal Carpet can answer for you.
Do I need to have a rug pad installed?
It is recommended for you to get a pad to place underneath your rug. It is not needed to provide cushion for you when you walk over it. Instead, its job is to protect the flooring beneath the rug, and to keep the rug from slipping out of place. The added cushion is, of course, a bonus.
Is it expensive to get a custom-made rug?
Not necessarily. It depends how big of a rug you want, as well as what kind of shape you want it to have, and what materials you want it made from. Regular-sized rugs made from wool, for example, are not that expensive. Check out our area rug glossary to see what rug materials are available to you.
What's the difference between the different types of fibers available?
Nylon is the most durable type of synthetic fiber available for rug-making. It is durable and easy to maintain. It is ideal for areas that see a lot of foot traffic, and in homes with children or pets. Wool is the most popular material for area rugs, and it will be able to hold up well to a lot of foot traffic. It can shed, and this is to be expected. Polypropylene is often used with rugs that are going to be placed next to windows so that the sun does not fade them. It is incredibly durable and resistant to staining, fading, static, and mold. There are also many other rug materials available to you besides these mentioned here. These are just some of the most popular options.
What shapes are available?
Circle, square, rectangle, hexagon, octagon, oval, and more.
Am I able to use different area rugs in the same room?
Yes, but you need to make sure that all the rugs in the room complement each other in terms of color and style. You don't want your rugs to clash.
How do I store my rug?
Be sure to clean the area rug first, and then roll and wrap it in heavy-duty plastic. Use moth balls inside of the rug and seal it all with tape.
Am I able to get my rug professionally-cleaned?
Yes, it is recommended that you get your rug cleaned every 2-5 years to keep it looking great and lasting for many years to come. This will help to get rid of nasty built-up grime and stains.
Why is my rug fading?
This often happens when the rug is placed in front of windows where direct sunlight gets in during the day. Also, natural dyes in the rugs tend to fade over time. Re-position the rug regularly to prevent UV rays from damaging one section.
