FAQs

Listed below are some of the commonly asked questions we receive at Universal Carpet when it comes to tile flooring.

What is the difference between ceramic tiles and porcelain tiles?

Ceramic tiles are typically made from red or white clay that has been fired in a kiln. They are finished with a durable glaze and are available for both wall and floor tile applications. Porcelain tile is made from a dust-pressed method of using porcelain clays which are dense. The tile have a lower water absorption rate when compared with ceramic tiles. Glazed porcelain tiles are ideal for both light and heavy foot traffic areas.

Does a sealer need to be used on ceramic tiles?

When you have a glazed ceramic tile, it already is stain-proof. This means there is no reason to add a sealer.

What is the difference between glazed and full-body tiles?

Glazed tiles have a coating of liquid glass on them which is baked into the surface of the clay. Unglazed tiles, or full-body tiles, do not have a surface that is glazed.

Do porcelain or ceramic tiles break or crack easily?

No, tiles that are installed properly do not crack with usual wear and tear. If tile is cracked it must have been exposed to extreme sharp impact or a shift in foundation. We ensure your subfloor is properly prepared before we tile your home. And we suggest keeping additional tiles in case you need to replace one at a future time.

Can I get warming coils added beneath the tile floor for warmth?

Yes, we are able to install warming coils underneath most ceramic or porcelain tiles in your home. Contact us and ask us for details about the benefits of this in your home.

How large should grout lines be between tiles?

Our installers will take care of all the grouting work for you, so you won't need to worry about it. But the size of the grout line will depend on what kind of size the tile is, as well as the look you are going for.

How should I care for my tile floor?

Use a broom or dust mop to sweep across the surface to remove dirt, dust, and grime. Lemon juice can be used to clean the floor and give it a fresh, clean, sparkling appearance.
